NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) is the EU standard for dividing countries
into comparable regions. Four levels, from broad to granular: NUTS-0 = country ·
NUTS-1 = macroregion (PL has 7) ·
NUTS-2 = region (PL: województwa, DE: Regierungsbezirke, IT: regioni) ·
NUTS-3 = subregion (smallest — groups of districts/municipalities)
The hierarchy differs per country because Eurostat maps to existing administrative boundaries.
